there is a plastic cover over the timing mark area, there should be an access to see it. it is between the radiator and the head on the engine. Once you find it, take the time to buff the area up (maybe 800 paper on a stick or ?) and then smear some white paint into it to highlight the marks for all the next times you check it.
synthetic oil? just changed most of my fleet last weekend, a 1987 9008v auto (199k miles), a 1987 900S 16v (360k miles), a 1987 900T convertible (142K miles), a 1992 9000CDT (260K miles), and a 1991 900S (about 96k Miles -odo was broken when I got it - need to repair or replace), and lastly my *new* 1994 9000Aero (78K miles and a new clutch too!). All Mobil-1 baby... also did my brothers 1990 900T (140K miles).
never had an oil leak upon changing from whatever was in the car to Mobil-1, and *always* used Mobil-1 on my new cars at first change.
