Well, it sounds like it won't matter too much what you do WRT the tranny. Do you know what oil is in there now? The least painful way to address it would be to drain the current stuff & put in BG Syncro Shift II. It sounds like a full clean at this point may just be unnecessary work & expense. (Still, if it were mine, I'd probably be anal about it & do the full clean & 1k mile rinse anyway, then go with BG SS2. :-D)
As for motor oil in an SPG, I'd definitely go the Auto-Rx route first, using 15W-40 dino oil for both the clean & rinse phases. After that, I'd use only M1 15W-50 (or Amsoil 20W-50) if I still lived in the LA area (I grew up in The Valley). It never gets cold enough there to bother using anything less in a Saab turbo.
