1) You remove and plug the vacuum hose from the vacuum advance on the distributer. You do not remove and plug the distributer. (That may be what you meant).
2) I only use Mobil 1, but others here feel it promotes leaks. I however spend time where temps go below -40, and Mobil 1 retains viscosity down to -35. It also is more stable, so I feel it is safer with a turbo. If you have ever rebuilt a turbo, you have seen the carbon deposits in the casing that must be scraped out. That is sludged oil that has then fossilized due to turbo heat. Mobil 1 resists that sludging and burning more, at least according to their literature.
3) The timing mark is under a plastic dirt guard that is located over the entire flywheel assembly. Most cars of our age have lost the dirt guard, so if you see a square hole, that is it. With time, the timing mark gets dirty and rusts, making identification more challenging. You need to clean the area with a light sanding. Many here even use a thin paint brush with white or yellow paint to mark the timing line. Others use chalk for a less permanent solution. Then there is no question as to the placement of the timing mark.
