My first question would be: Why did your mechanic say you'd need a new tranny soon?
My next question would be: Are you having any problems now?
Depending on your answers, it might be OK to just swap in new fluid & go. However, since you've already said you want this tranny to last as long as possible, IMO an A-Rx cleaning would be a good thing. If the oil's been in there for a while, I'd probably put in fresh 15W-40 for the cleaning. Then I'd pretty much do the same thing I did with mine: put in a good 15W-40 for a year/10k miles, then dump that & go with a 5W-40 syn.
Also, just so you know, one of the indy Saab garages near me is also a Redline reseller. They put Redline into Saab trannies all week long. They told me that when a Saab tranny is on its way out, the ONLY stuff that they found makes a difference is BG Syncro Shift II.
