Dashboard Restoration Posted by Mio [Email] (#2511) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mio) on Tue, 14 Nov 2006 17:15:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
As part of the total restoration of my ’89 SPG, I decided to have my dashboard professionally restored. A bit of research uncovered that there were two primary players in this space, namely: Just Dashes in Van Nuys, CA and Dashboard Restorations in Brush Prairie, WA.
I contacted both organizations to get some estimates. The individual at Just Dashes quoted me a price of $900 to $1100 (8- to 12-week turnaround time) with the exact price being a function of the condition of the core. I then spoke to Pete at Dashboard Restorations USA and he quoted me a price of $475 (6-week turnaround time). While I don't have a degree in economics, it made sense to go with Dashboard Restorations.
In my initial discussions with Pete he expressed some concern about being able to refinish the glove box door given that they (for the most part) contain a vinyl-like laminated cover. Specifically, he wasn't convinced that it would be feasible to restore the door. This was a moot point from my perspective given that I already had a non-laminated glove box door on hand.
The actual turnaround time (taking into consideration shipping to and from their facility) proved to be closer to 9 weeks. In fairness, I am extremely pleased with the results and the pictures honestly do not do justice to the quality of their work. Further, a 3 week delay is nothing when one considers that I’ve been waiting 3 years and 8 months for a certain machine shop to finish rebuilding my engine but, hey, that is entirely another issue.
