You are describing the symptoms of a bad ignition control module. When they go bad, the heat of operation causes them to quit. When cooled, they are again functional. They run hot, which is why they are mounted on a heat sink. When they quit, you get no spark or fuel. (Saabs must get a spark signal to run fuel pump.)
A used one is fine. They are on a ton of cars. From eEuro:
-----------------------------------
Part Description:
Ignition control unit for any of the following-
Saab:
900 16V non-turbo 86-87, 90-93(and 94 convertible),
9000 16v 2.0 non-turbo 87-89
Volvo:
89-93 240,
740 all 85-92,
760 V6 87-90, 760T 85-90,
780V6 87-90, 780T 87-90,
940 all 91-95.
-----------------------------------
(Note that you cannot use one from a 900 Turbo on your NA; they are not the same. But modules from Volvo Turbo modules *can* be used.)
