audio question

Has anyone hooked up an audio source like an Ipod or XM receiver directly to an amplifier? Totally bypassing a receiver unit? I have no use for an FM radio/CD player and would rather use the hole in the dash for gauges or other things.
At home, one might install an expensive preamp to avoid having a receiver. A professional might have a mixing board to avoid the receiver. A big mackie mixer wouldn't look right on my c900 dash. Are there any options for a car?
