Without oil pressure, that light will remain. That's it's job. You said the filter is dry, suggesting no oil is making it up through the pump. The use of Vaseline on assembly should have done the job. That it didn't suggests there is a problem with the pick-up tube, which is what draws oil from near the bottom of the oil pan up into the pump. If you only removed the pump cover and replaced the pump internal parts, I don't see how the p/u tube would have been effected since it's bolted in place inside the crank case. You initially mentioned a squeeling sound, which is never good. I've never had to prime a pump, even with a used engine replacement, but then I didn't open up the pump cover and drain it's contents. Before starting next time, be sure to pour plenty of oil into the filter inlet hole. You may have to remove the filter housing to do it properly. Tough to do with all the brake, AC, alternator and intake components in the way, so you may need to remove some of them to get to the filter housing bolts.
