1991 Saab 900 Turbo Electrical Problems

About a month ago, I bought a 1991 Saab 900 Turbo. Up until today, it has been running like a champ. Today however, I went out to my car to drive to class and noticed the tachometer wasn't working. In addition, I noticed that none of the lights on the left side of the instrument panel were working. However, the car ran just fine. It ran fine throughout the day, until about three hours ago.
On the way to my friends house, the volume of the radio got very low for about 15 seconds, and then came back to normal. I thought nothing of it, went to my friends house, hung out for about two hours, and then began to drive home. The car started just fine, but approximately halfway home, the speakers died. The radio was still working, I could hear the mechanism of the tape deck running, and when I switched to the radio, it would still pull in signals, but produce no sound.
About a quarter mile from home, the ABS light came on steady, and the engine RPM's started rising and falling slightly. I pulled away from the stop, and about 200 feet down the road the engine began running very roughly, and then died.
I know it sounds like an alternator failure, but the left side of the dash dying puzzles me, and I am wondering if any of the gurus out there can think of anything else I can check.
Perhaps unrelated, perhaps not, about a week ago, I hit the turn signal stalk with my knee, and two days ago, it fell out, still connected by the wires. Yesterday I attempted to repair it, but failed and was messing with the contacts trying to figure it out.
