Timing cogs

I have a 1992 900 Turbo which suffers from a lumpy idle but otherwise is a perfectly smooth car. I have been through a laborious process of checking / removing / replacing all ignition and fuel injection components to try and solve the problem, but am now convinced that the problem may lie inside the engine.
I ran a compression test and the results were fairly even, between 8 and 11 bar across the 4 cylinders. This did not worry me as I have had other 900's over the years with similar results.
What I then thought about was would it be possible that the camshaft timing cogs could be misaligned? If one cog was off, say one tooth, would the car run semi-normally, or would I have worse symptoms than a lumpy idle? I don't really want to take the valve cover off unless I have to, so any comments advice would be appreciated.
Thanks, Angus
