Thanks for the response. The reason I suspect the internal timing is that 1 year ago (before I purchased the car) it had the head gasket replaced and in the process the timing chain and other gear was replaced. This is the only reason I have to suspect something may be amiss here. Incidentally, in my fault finding I swapped all components from my convertible (a car which had a perfect idle) on to this car - plugs, leads, dist. cap, rotor arm, FPR, injectors, AMM and complete air filter housing, AIC valve, and I also replaced all vacumn hoses. There was a notable inprovement in the cars idle when this was done, but this 'regular' chugging / roughness to the idle still remained. I also have to say that the car is definitely not lacking in power, uses no oil and boosts very smoothly. The idle sits at about 900 but drops 50-100 rpm and 'chugs' constantly. This is not a 'show-stopper' but is just annoying that I have not managed to fix it yet. I might just pull the valve cover off for peace of mind. The only thing not replaced yet is the actual distributor, but I did check timing with my strobe (it was spot on). I guess I could check the earths to the chassis too, but I would have expected a bad earth to result in more problems than just a regular lumpy idle.
