Water Pump Seal Leak -- Cause = Overheating

Got stuck in serious traffic hassles (Atlanta) causing my '88 Saab CVT to overheat. Having troubles with the fans coming on....use the heater to help balance the temp level while in stop-go traffic.
I was on the phone and not paying attention....steam started coming
from the back of the engine. Quickly turned on the heater and pulled
onto side streets to get moving again (had to do something since the fans are not working).
Notice there is a steady drip-drip-drip at the back of the engine
where the water pump is. Pump doesn't make noises.
I realize I have to replace the water pump seal...and the water pump
since I have to pull it.
Wondering if I can use a coolant leak additive like BARS to get
me through the week without doing damage -- that and a couple
gallons of water in the trunk.
There used to be a great step-by-step guide to "transplanting"
a remanufactured water pump. Doesn't seem to work any more.
Any other sources for step-by-step guides.
I appreciate goin' to school on people smarter than me --
and more experienced.
Thanks,
Frank
