I found that a good tool to have is the Craftsman long-handled 3/8" drive pivot ratchet. It lets you reach some bolts more easily and gives good leverage.
You'll also want to pick up some LocTite 518. Some people say you don't need it, which is probably true in most cases. But, if you can't get all of the old gasket material scraped off the water pump housing or if there's a nick in the sealing surface on the water pump replacement, it'll save you from having to redo the procedure.
Check your belts to see if they have cracks or checks in them. Now is the perfect time to replace them.
Below is a link to the Townsend Imports page on water pump replacement. It's pretty darned good.
I use a slight variation on their procedure, which doesn't require removal of the A/C compressor. If you have long thin arms, this variation of the procedure may well work for you. If you find that you can't easily squeeze your left arm between the engine and the firewall, you'll have to remove the A/C compressor. I go in from the passenger side of the vehicle and reach behind the engine to access the water pump pulley bolts and attachment bolts.
A few things in addition to the Townsend procedure that will help when you've got the new water pump in and are putting the belts on:
- Before you start work, make a note of which belts go on each of the pulley grooves.
- To put the pulley on the water pump, put the pulley on with one bolt loosely threaded in and use that bolt as a pivot so you can slide the belts over the edge of the pulley. Then put the rest of the belts on and get them at least finger tight. You can fully tighten them when you have the belt slack adjusted. If you put new belts on, you'll have to readjust belt tension after a few days.

For the fan thermoswitch, an easy way to check whether it's the switch is to pull the connectors off the thermoswitch and jumper them with a screwdriver, some needle-nosed pliers or something similar. If the fan starts, the thermoswitch is bad. If it doesn't, something else is amiss - maybe the fan is bad or the relay is bad. That will take some more diagnosis.

I'll wave to you when we pass each other on our ways to work. I work next to the Porsche HQ, across from the King & Queen Bldgs and take the top end of the perimeter to work.
Marietta traffic! Man, you're brave :-)
Ya got me beat for numbers - I'm only on #5.
