the leaky seal causes the overheating. BTDT with my '89 SPG.
The leak doesn't allow sufficient pressure to build up in the cooling system, so the coolant boils, and hot spots develop in the head because there's vapor in the high spots instead of liquid coolant. Get it fixed as soon as you can, lest a new headgasket and/or warped head be in your near future.
If you're a DIYer, we can walk you through the procedure.
Bars leak will not help you becuase the seal has a rotating surface.
Where in Atlanta? I'm in Tucker.
