DaleG,
You can tell a lot about synchromesh balk rings by seeing how that lay in (or on) the muff. Really worn syncho rings will fall into the muff until the rim is supporting them. Of course a ring that far gone is doing nothing to promote smooth shifting and must be replaced. The pyramidal teeth around the outside wear away as well. Back when I was rebuilding virgin units, most of which had around 150,000 miles (that magic number) and mostly needed just pinion bearings, the balk rings were typically in very fine condition unless the driver was really, really bad at shifting and there were usually other problems in that case. By the second rebuild about 1/3 to 1/2 of the balk rings were ready to be replaced. Nowadays you can't be real sure what the history of most of these units includes so you have to see how the rings sit, look for signs of advanced wear and, as a last resort, just go ahead and replace them. Even with new rings if the 1-2 fork is badly worn, like they often are, you'll have rough shifting so look closely at that. Cheers
