This is not a terribly difficult job.
The 1975-1987 front brakes are just horrible these days. 20 years ago, when new parts were plentiful, and good pads could be had, they were fine, but today, the best thing to do, IMHO, is convert to the later brakes.
The problem with this, though, is you also have to change over all of your wheels. Saab also changed the bolt circle in 1988, so your 87 and earlier wheels won't work.
And, to make things even more difficult, the e-brake has to be switched to the rear wheels.
Other than those, the front spindle swap is easy, as is the rear axle swap (though you may have the devil of a time locating one that didn't have ABS, and thus only one hose to the rear axle). Now, these rear calipers are getting to be somewhat hard to find also, particularly with working e-brakes. But overall, the improvement in braking, pedal feel, and no more clunking will have you smiling, IMO.
I've got a 1990 900 now (w/ABS) and I really love the brakes. Not quite so much as the ones on my 9-5 Arc, but pretty close.
