I'm not a big fan of the 2.1 liter engine. So that rules out about 91 and up NA. Then again, I'd stick with turbos.
1988 was the introduction of ABS. That's good and bad. ABS is nice. ABS greatly complicates the brakes, and if the ABS system goes out - typically the ABS pump - you lose brake boost, and the car can't be safely driven.
My favorite would be a '86-87 Turbo. Light, no ABS, 16V engine. Other than that, 90-93 turbos would be just fine. More complex, but the end of the era. Convertable '94's are Old Generation. Sedan '94s are the new generation.
