In an ideal world where you have the choice of any model in comparable condition, I'd recommend '89 or '90 turbo models. The '89 and '90 have the same transmission - larger pinion bearings than the earlier models, and sturdier than the '91 or newer model transmissions that had improved shifting at the cost of some durability, or so I hear.

If you prefer a simple model, choose an '89 because you have no ABS or airbag to be concerned with. Otherwise the two years are just about identical. If you find an '89 you will likely have to deal with the motorized seatbelts, but these are easy to convert to standard seat belts. The older 8 valve cars are smooth but I don't like dealing with CIS injection.

Kevin's advice is good because decent C900 cars are getting difficult to find. Buy the best one you can get regardless of year. Improvements are easy to retrofit.
