curious- when they refer to an engine running hot - hot enough to produce NoX basically the result of a lean combustion - do they not mean internal combustion temperature eg what goes on inside the cylinder head?
I can see how a faulty thermostat or rad would cause an engine to run "hot" but this is a different sort of "hot" where the engine is unable to shed its heat quickly enough.Only when the engine is really really hot might you get pinging - but with today's fuels and the APC that's pretty rare.
NoX is usually the result of a weak fuel mixture- related to a whole host of issues from timing to fuel mixture setting, to weak or clogged injectors to ineffective fuel filter, to an FPR that may not be delivering enough fuel.
Another cause of a lean mixture is a vacuum leak - large enough that the 02 sensor cannot compensate. This leak can be on the intake side but it can also be on the exhaust side. I'd start there by looking at your mainfolds - stick a tennis ball into your throttle, block off all vacuum hoses to/from manifolds and using a soap and an air pump check for leaks at the gaskets.
usually when an O2 sensor fails the tendency is to go rich so while I wouldn't rule it out I wouldn't start there either.
