Yeah you can just turn the flywheel until it shows TDC at the mark on the housing. Every time the flywheel shows TDC pistons 1 and 4 are at TDC. When the flywheel is rolled 180 degrees from TDC pistons 2 and 3 are at TDC but there probably isn't any mark on your flywheel there. You can remove the spark plug and put any kind of a stick (long screwdriver, pencil, dowel, whatever) in there then roll the engine slowly (by hand) while you watch the stick rise, works fine, won't hurt a thing (if you're reasonably careful).
