Our 1963(?) Lark convertible had a flathead six. Studebaker tried but it didn't have the capital to design new basic engines with overhead valves.
Neatest thing I observed about a Saturn was the clever way they did the engine castings. They make a dummy block out of styrofoam with the steel cylinder liners fitted into it, bury it in sand, then when they pour the molten aluminum in the styrofoam instantly flashes to vapor and the aluminum takes its place.
The external texture of the block still looked just like the outside of a styrofoam cooler, individual styrofoam beads still visible, but made of aluminum.
Probably every maker doing aluminum engines does the same thing now.
