here is my story:
It was the summer of 1986, I was only 16. My brother told me the previous day that he was bringing home a new(used) car. I waited all morning to see what kind of car he would bring. He was tired of the Audis, and the VW Beetle had spun out on the highway, and his wife told him that she would never ride with him again in that car.
On that hot day, I waited with hot anticipation, and I raced to the door upon hearing a key go into the cylinder. I flung the door open and looked directly in my brother's sweaty face. "Did you get it"?
After he nodded. I ran outside, and studied the weirdest car I ever saw in my 16 years.
It was dark brown(Dorado brown) The back... the back was the first thing that caught my eye.. the way it sloped down...I ran my eyes to the front..what a short funny nose. The front windshield! why is the front windshield like that?? the way it protruded. I moved in closer, and noticed the humps on the edges of the bonett. This car is weird I said.
I then walked to the back of the car... and studied that huge sloping back doorwith that huge back glass. My eyes lowered to the letters on the lower section: Saab 99GL. I walked back to the side, glanced at the odd dashboard through the glass. My sweaty hands then gripped the door handle and pulled the heavy thick door open...
Wow.. this car does not have the huge center humps on the floor! I sat on the seat designed with an odd hole at the head portion, and closed the door. I believed at that moment I was hooked. I opened the door and walked
up to my brother.."Can I wash it?" He nodded. I spent the next hour and a half in the heat fondling every curve, slope, hump, with a soapy sponge.
The next year(1987) my brother told me he wants to buy a Saab 900. What is a Saab 900? He showed me.. "you see how the front is longer.." he said as we saw one on the road one day. "It has a nicer interior also."
It was 1987, and there were a mix of 99s and 900s on the road. It was the first year of the new bumpers, so those cars were not that popular. What was desired were those late model 1983/ 1984 Saab turbos with the bumper extensions with those "new" leather seats.
My second brother( who ended up buying the 99) brought home a 1987 brochure, and showed me a picture of the 900 SPG. The picture ended up taped to the wall.
In NYC, it seams the 900 owners were a bit more arrogant when one drove a 99. My eldest brother kept talking of the 900. The 900 appeared lower, longer, thus sleeker. That year, he purchased a 79 900EMS in cardinal red. To make a long story short, two years later in 1989, I was driving that same car. It is now 2009 and I am seriously stuck in a time warp.
Let us hear your story..
