Years and years ago I needed a car to get to work my first summer home from college, and a friend of my dad had a used car dealership, so somehow I ended up with a faded blue '73 96 V-4 wagon. It had a tractor engine, 4 on the tree, and a weird little jump seat in the back, and would haul a huge pile of stuff. I kept it running for a couple of years, doing valves and even a clutch replacement (hard to believe I was so ambitious) but I really couldn't keep it at school, and my parents didn't want it, so it went away.
Over the many intervening years I owned some practical boring cars, and didn't really pay much attention to Saabs, but all along what I really wanted was a convertible. About 2 years ago we had a couple of problems with the station wagon and I looked into replacing it. What a shock. Even something like a base Subaru was an enormous amount of money. There was nothing fundamentally wrong with the family car beyond the fact I was just tired of it, so I decided it might make more sense to just pay for the repairs and instead of making a down payment on a new car, buy a used one outright. I wanted a convertible, but one that would fit the kids too. I'd owned a VW before, but enough horror stories about the rabbit convertibles made me keep looking. "Hmm, what about a Saab? The 96 was pretty nice in a strange way. Lets see, cloth top, 5 speed, front wheel drive, seats 4, reasonable safety, strange but quality engineering, made in Finland, what could be better!" Found a local independent with a few for sale, drove one car for an hour or so, came back with a huge grin, got the ok from the wife and bought it the same day.
Now I'm fighting the impulse to get a matching hardtop for winter.
