They would have gone the speed limit (ie 55). They don't really accelerate to pass. They rarely pass. They use cruise control...
Maybe your friend just drove his Civic harder. The fact he has a stick might suggest he is more into driving... no? same deal for the bike? A civic owner on the 9-5 board claimed to routinely get 43mpg on the highway... maybe the civic displays are not accurate - I agree, a proper measurement of fuel in + miles traveled is best.
Me, I like to have fun driving. I've only measured our c900 fuel economy once, while averaging 75mph with the car loaded down + a roof rack, box, and 2 bikes on the roof! It was pretty bad, but that's how a Saab's meant to be driven, so I'm ok with it... under those conditions, even a civic's going to drink a lot of gas!
