OK I re-read your post. I don't think you have to remove the nylon bottom section to work on the key. Just remove the metal plates and you will have full access to the key section.
Oh, by the way the key cylider will come out without disconnecting anything if you have the key.
You obviously have the standard as the auto doesn't have the plastic.
If you want to twist the shifter you need to remove the shifter. undo the 3 screws at the ball and pull the shfter out. It should now twist a bit, at least enough to undo the 2 screws. Don't use any force.
Again, to work on the key there is no need to remove the plastic section.
