Very possibly the float arm on the sending unit has gotten hung up. Since I didn't think the gauge read in liters, I assume it was reading around a quarter tank when things went badly. Did it go to full when you filled the tank? I assume the car started fine.
Also - what year car? In the early years there is a two-stage pump. If the pre-pump fails, you can run out of gas with the tank half full.
How much gas did it take to fill the tank?
