All this can help pinpoint the problem. Someone mentioned the pre-pump, but 8v cars didn't get them, and the actual electrical pre-pump only lasted a few years, replaced by venturi pumps, which are a whole different beast.
But if your car is a 16v made before 1990, you should have the electrical pre-pump. Those can go bad.
What the pre-pump does is fill a small "bucket" in the tank. The main pump draws fuel from this bucket. What this does is it keeps the main pump drawing fuel while you may be maneuvering, particularly on left turns. Low fuel levels in an 8v car would cause the motor to cut out completely in a hard left because they didn't have the pre-pump & bucket.
If the pre-pump fails, what can happen is it stops filling the bucket. If the bucket is sufficiently sealed (most are), once the fuel level gets down to 1/3 to 1/4, the pre-pump is no longer filling the bucket, and the main pump draws all the fuel out, and eventually the motor stops.
In 1990 or so, Saab removed the electrical pre-pump, and filled the bucket using a venturi pump operating off the fuel supply pressure. A little after that, they switched to running the venturi pump off of the fuel return.
