The 9000 will be more reliable than the 900, the auto trans are usually good for 200K, just change the fluid and clean the filter (very easy job on the 9000). The one thing that can leave use stranded is the DIC, but the 88 might still use a distributor.
If the car hasn't seen alot of service, you'll probably be looking at replacing the rear suspension bushings for the front, change ALL the fluids, possible anti-lock pressure canister.
The real downside to the 9000 is that there are NO good generic shop manuals. I bought a used set of factory manuals 10 years ago and it was money well spent for DIY, but takes up almost 2 feet of shelf space.
Having owned 4 900's and 6 9000's, I prefer the 9000 most of the time. The 93 , If I remember, was a unique year for the drive train, but this would best be asked on the 9K board.
