Hi Dan,
It is a possibilty; the next option would be to clean the best you can, refill the reservoir, bleed it, and operate the top up an down to see if you see any visible bleeding leaks.
Inspect also the connection where the brass hose fittings connect to the motor.
When you are operating the top, see if there is a slow piston; possible by looking at the top of the pistons.
You may suddenly, notice that there are gaps(air) while viewing the transparent hoses.
In my experience, I had a car that leaked and leaked, after removing the system, changing the o ring; yet it still leaked. The leak was from the motor. I finaly gave up, and placed a complete used system in the car, which took care of that.
The negative side of a leak is that it ruins the rear carpet, and removes the paint off of the floor.
Actually, removing the whole system is not that bad. Once the system is out, changing the piston is very easy. When you remove the panels, wear a glove and place a finger in the side( below the pistons) wells. If you pick up hydraulic fluid, there is your answer.
The other way is to pull up the motor from its ( one good straight yank)mounting, and inspect right below to see if it is wet.
To replace the O ring, it can be done in the car, yet make sure you place a lot of towels after pulling the motor up. There are four small screws, and the O ring is accessible.
