Hi,
there are really only four places for the system to leak as follows:
it's usually one of the two hydraulic rams, but that means that the leak is isolated to usually directly underneath the ram, rarely are two leaking.
the lines at the pump, have you done any work there?
the the resviour/impeller portion of the pump. The pump is actually two pieces, the DC motor that drives the hydraulic side (which is the second part)
A fitting somewhere - fittings are at the rams to raise/lower top, at the pump, and at the bypass valve which is accessed via the trunk. you get to the valve in the trunk, all the way forward on the right side in the corner is a flap in the carpet (on the vertical surface not the floor) and it's the righty tighty lefty loosie to bipass the pump when not working.
I would do this:
mop up all of the fluid,
build a "DAM" of cloth shop rag type stuff under the cross bar after you get it dry.
refill the fluid, to HALF of the height of the container, it needs room to reclaim fluid from the rams. it's the silver hex plug on the top
using wrenches just barely snug the joings and compression fittings around the pump res.
run the system and watch for leaks, it will foam as the air is forced around the system, HOWEVER it will eventually work all of the air out of the fluid and lines. Do a couple of runs and let it sit for 10 minutes, the electrical motor has a thermal cut out if it gets too hot, and you don't want to blow the fuse in the engine compartment either.
Keep doing this until you figure out the leak orgin.
If it's the pump/res unit.... you can remove the lines from the res (I like to have some nitril inspection gloves and put the line in the finger of the glove and then tie off) the pump section can be removed from the motor, or you can replace the entire unit as a whole. If you need one send me an email.
places that I'd expect a leak are: 1) the fitting is loose and can be tightened (just snug please) 2) the pump assy is cracked and can be replaced 3) one of the rams is leaking, this can be replaced but is the most difficult of all the possibilities, 4) the bypass valve in the trunk is leaking, again snug the fittings and make sure you are either all the way open or all the way closed.
Don't bother taking the system out of the car, it's not necessary AND also could lead to dripping that fluid on the outside of the car, you don't want that either.
Let me know if you have anyother questions or problems.... I currently have a 1987, a 1991, another 1987 AND take car of a 1988 for a client...
