Typical old-school SAAB safety engineering. First, two separate brake circuits are better than one circuit for all four wheels. The concept of diagonal brake circuits is that if something happens to cause the brake line on one circuit to lose pressure, then you would lose one front brake and one rear brake on opposite sides of the car. This was deemed safer than possibly losing both front brakes (which do more than 75% of the work), and more stable than losing all braking on one side of the car. Up until 1987, all SAABs had the handbrake acting on the front wheels also. (except maybe the early 9000s)
