Headliner shell - thoughts on reinforcing/repair needed

So I started taking out the headliner of my 85 SPG back in May, just before I had an operation to patch up a hernia. Bad, timing? Yes! ;-)
Any rate, I loosened up enough of the hardware that the left side sagged just enough that the small piece between the dome light and the edge ended up breaking into several pieces (recall that at that time the dome light was not centered but just to the left and rear of the driver's seat).
I want to fix that before I take it to the upholsterer. Thought about stringing the bits along a wire (sort of like a string of beads), taping it in place and then use something like expanding foam to join the whole bit together. This of course would be followed by some sanding to restore the original form. I'd also like to reinforce the edges of the whole shell by painting on some glue as it seems so fragile.
So that is my plan at this point.
So to my questions:
1) Can you fix this material, or would I be better off using the experience of getting the shell out of my car and going to the junkyard and getting a "new" one?
2) Does anyone know what the shell is actually made of? Seems like a combo of felt and cardboard.
3) Is this stuff hydrophobic? In other words can you use water-based glues on it? I only ask as it seems slightly greasy to the touch.
I bet if someone would make a mold of these things and then started to produce replacements out of fiberglass that they would have a grateful customer-base.
Any experience here is welcomed.
Barry
