Up to 1986 the dome light is above the driver's b piller like an old VW bug. Starting in 1987 the dome light is centered like on most other cars. When I removed my headliner shell the same area as yours failed. I went to the pick & pull and purchased another shell out of a 1987. The wires for the dome light had to be extended. After scraping all the old crude off, I painted my new shell with three coats of oil based kiltz primer & three coats of oil based satin paint. The shell really soaked up the paint. The headliner fabic was then laid. Seven years later & all is well.
Most use 3M general trim adhesive.
The real trick is to hand sew the plastic edging on the sunroof.
