I agree with saab86, this is really common, + an easy diy. Just go slowly in the tight corners if you want them to look perfect - I was a little too quick in the recess behind the sunroof. Also be very careful to keep your hands clean when you reinstall.
I just did our 1993. Not sure the exact material, looks somewhere between cardboard + compressed fibreglass (like an acoustic panel). Our headliner had no major damage, just a few little things I wanted to reinforce. I used bondo hair. It's long strands of fibreglass in bondo + might not be too bad for bigger repairs, but I found it kind of hairy + gloppy + messy for what I was trying to fix. I should have used bondo glass instead. The hair needed too much sanding to clean up (though doesn't need to be perfect as the foam hides a lot). btw, be careful sanding, as the shell is easily damaged + I found the bondo could almost be peeled off if the fibers in the shell came loose while sanding (which you have to do to clean up the old foam + adhesive). Suggestions to soak it in a glue or primer are probably well taken.
Later this year, I'll do the 1989. It has 6 cracks in the shell. My plan is to fibreglass the whole thing properly (or at least the critical areas that broke). Ie cloth + resin.
I have photos of the job on the 1993 + if anyone's interested I can post.
