1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
Today was my first engine/trans removal after studying this bb and the helpful hints from Roger D., thanks. The candidate was a 1990 900T conv with only 97,000 miles hit hard in the front. The trans was fine, but the radiator and fans were pushed into the front of the trans. No damage to the trans. It took me an hour to get the mess off the front to get to the clutch. The car still had clutch function so I was able to wedge a piece of pipe between the clutch pedal and seat. Roger D. suggested cutting a piece of hood cable release and using it for the spacer. It worked perfect. I have the SAAB clutch tool, but used a 8mm bolt, large socket, washer and out popped the input shaft. Thank you bb.
The biggest hang ups were the taper pin, and the passenger side motor mount. I never got the taper pin out and almost gave up. I ended up undoing the dog bone and pulling the shaft out from the inside of the car and leaving the taper pin. It took a long time to reach in past the coil spring and undo the passenger side motor mount bolts from the bottom with a 14mm wrench. There is no room. Does anyone have a better way, please?
Another suggestion of Rogers, to get the inner driver free without the spacers. I undid all the lower a-arm bolts, tie rod ends, lower shocks, sway bar mounts and pulled out the hub. Then I had to get the engine hoist. Pushing this thing 1/8 of a mile in 80 degree weather, I only weigh 130 lbs. The p-n-p guy suggested cutting a piece of seat belt and looping it through the engine hoist points and tying a knot. When I hooked up the hoist and started pulling and the engine came free, what a rush!!
I undid the 13 bolts being careful of the 13mm nut and stud. When I had all the fasteners undone the engine did not separate from the trans. I tapped around lightly with a hammer and the pieces separated. Had to go back and get the wheel barrel to put the trans in.
7.5 hours with lunch. 1/3 off sale, $100 for the trans out the door. What a day of SAAB therapy. I am bruised, battered, and tired, but I did it thanks to this bb and the suggestions of Roger D.
There will be more. Thank you everyone who has contributed information on trans removal found in the archives.
