1985 wiring - reinsulate or replace?

So I've searched the c900 BB messages the past few days to get an idea how to deal with the degraded wiring on my 85 SPG that appears to kill the battery within 2 - 3 weeks if the car is not used. (She has only 120k on her and is a rust-free Midwest car so she isn't my daily driver.)
I've already down some rewrapping of exposed leads using electricians tape. But of course if I do the whole smash I'd be looking for some heat shrink stuff, though I don't know if tha would work on such a big job.
Replacing wire, one piece at a time, is an option I'd consider, but I'm not electrically inclined and don't know where to start with matching up the proper wire gauge and color (want to keep that the same for future trouble shooting, right?)
Finally, swapping out a harness from a newer 900t seems above what I can commit to in time, patience and money (probably can't afford to have a shop do this big job).
Any rate any sage advice is appreciated. Links to kind soul's web pages that have taken the time to document their odyssey is appreciated too.
