I wouldn't hesitate to take my 1990 on a 1400 mile trip, BUT
1) I've spent thousands on it to put it in top notch condition(as I think you know)
2) You haven't (what I think I know)
3) If even something simple like the alternator goes out, you are stuck for at least 24 hours until Advance auto or Autozone gets one from the warehouse.
4) As confident as I am in my car, I would NEVER take the family on that kind of road trip in it (it's a Murphy's law kind of thing).
5) When we visit my mother in law (700 mile round trip), We always take either my wife's 2 year old car with 20K on it, or rent a car (of course, that's an easier option for me as a 50 year old guy with a job than it is for a college student).

Either rent a car (that would be my vote if you can afford it comfortably), or really look the Saab you've got over (at least make sure your belts and hoses and up to snuff/test your alternator and battery output), take tools, and spare parts, if you got em, and say a little prayer to the automotive gods. Strangely enough, if its a toss up between the two, I'd go with the 900S; It has fewer miles, is simpler, and more easy to fix, and as a non-turbo, there are fewer key parts to break.

I hope you have an emergency set of spares (relays, ignition amplifier, coil, Spare ECU). For what a couple of days of a week's rental car would cost you can easily buy all of this stuff that is good to have around. Bentley has a list in the front section of good spare items to carry with you, and I'm sure the folks here would be glad to add suggestions.

My two (and a half) cents.
