Unfortunately the ABS system doesn't store codes - if you don't catch it with the light on, the diagnostic tool is useless and you gotta test parts with a multimeter. I think the diagnosis of a wheel sensor is the most likely given the symptoms.
I would positively NOT remove that light - driving around with a goofy wheel sensor is one thing, but you need that light to tell you if the ABS system is having a more substantial problem. You don't want to find out the hard way that braking performance has changed because of an ABS fault.
IMHO, if you're not going to fix the problem I'm rip out the system - the non-ABS system (booster/master) will bolt right up, you just need to change the actual brake pedal.
