Just returned to lovely Madison, WI (are) home after a road trip to Fayetteville, Arkansaas for business. I made the leap of faith and opted to drive the FrankenSaab (search for previous posts circa 2009-10). Having logged > ~2 yrs and ~20k miles of more-or-less local driving it had gained my trust but still, with 115k mi on 2.1l NA motor (no biggie), 245k mi on chassis and suspension (needs rear spring boost and RF ball joints, but OK) and especially in light of the fact that the transplanted 5 spd from my dearly departed '88 900 has logged over 420k mi and shows sounds of pinion bearing wear, it was a risk.
The car ran GREAT. It cruised strongly along the rds south trough Iowa, then south through MO, and into AR and all the way back. The temp indicator maintained an invariant position at 3 p.m. sharp, I got a consistant 27-30 mpg, and I even got a welcome compliment along the way. I was outside a convenience store near the U-Ark campus plugging the address of my (flea-bag) motel into the GPS nav unit when a lovely young woman veered of of the sidewalk and came by my car, stopping only briefly and in passing, to say "I really like your car".
Aaahhhh! I'll almost certainly be bitching and moaning about some problem with it in the (hopefully distant) future, but for the moment, I just want to say:
OH MY GOD I LOVE THESE CARS!
