Each to his own! I prefer the peace of mind of knowing Posted by nicknick [Email] (#731) [Profile/Gallery] (more from nicknick) on Mon, 6 Feb 2012 10:59:16 In Reply to: leave the junk behind - 2 or 3 mpg of dead-, jimmy, Sun, 5 Feb 2012 13:16:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
that i have a few less potential reasons to have my wife and I stranded in 'GM' country (pretty much most of the US!) with a car that lots of folks have never even heard of, let alone know how to fix/get parts! Besides, the weight of tools and parts is less than 1 passenger (don't expect you would suggest leaving a passenger behind to save fuel??), and they are mostly under the trap door in the trunk, so not likely to be flying around all that much in an accident.
And, while i can look at my alternator selection and pick the best one, i can't be sure it won't fail in the middle of Arkansas (please no!). The basic cost benefit analysis works in this instance-carry a spare!
It does not, however, mean that we should start carrying transmissions and engines, drive shafts or radiators (although i may throw a rad in next trip!!). I carry the title with me, instead. If the trans blows, i'm scrapping the car, or renting a truck and towing home (depending on distance from home. But you can't even dispose of the car without the title! And i don't consider my SiS worthy of abandoning...
And, i have been stranded with a failed rotor (in the distributor), a failed fuel pump (got it running with a good tap), alternator (my jump starter pack JUST got me home), spark plug (engine still ran, of course, just rough), cracked fuel line (at the rail), several different hoses, water pump gasket, belts, and other things i can't think of right now.
MAybe we are talking about different types of road trips?
Interesting that anyone would advocate being 'less prepared', especially in this day and age.
Like i said, each to his own...
