Buy the wife a new car or used coming off a lease Posted by Notnoel [Email] (#23) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Notnoel) on Thu, 29 Mar 2012 13:45:50 In Reply to: Overwhelmed, RadioFlyer, Thu, 29 Mar 2012 09:28:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Get her what she asks for. Then you can do whatever you want with the Saabs.
A couple of years ago, I bought my wife the brand new Econo-box she wanted. Her specifications were: good gas mileage (30+ MPG), lots of air bags, seats 5, hatch-back, and comfortable. The Fed's seriously helped me out with the cash-for-clunkers program and she very happily went from her quasi-luxurious 1989 MB station wagon (15 MPG)to a brand new 2009 Nissan Versa with a bottom line cost of $8,850 (Thank you, Mr. President). We crushed my beloved 1994 Isuzu Trooper that was the most trouble-free vehicle I ever owned (but had begun to rust out), and kept the MB for the daughter.
Just swapped out daughter's MB to a very sweet, well maintained 1999 Subaru Legacy Outback to make daughter similarly happy for a net cost of $2,200 for the transaction. Subaru owners are as cult-like as we are, so there must be something to it.
After doing this, my wife totally lets me indulge myself on the Saab (1990 turbo vert). My Saab is my daily driver, and I maintain it the way Justin advises; I often describe it as the "the only brand new 1990 Saab 900 in the DC area." I've swapped out the engine and the transmission since then with out any marital complaints (two separate occasions), and she just gave me permission to buy brand new upholstery from Saabstuff.
But, if it is HER car breaking down, you will never hear the end of it and your Saab collection will not be long for this world (or your driveway, at least).
