1) marriage is indeed a compromise - do what you can to address her concerns. I assume zipcar is a car share program, and maybe it would work for her to use that, or to have that membership so you have that option if/when the 900 breaks down. Don't push the c900 on her as the only choice for her to drive. If nothing else it's helpful to have access to another car while you are doing work on the 900. Forgot to ask - do you DIY some/all repairs? That is helpful to keep these cars on the road cost effectively. Many repairs are simple things one can do by the side of the road with minimal tools (which you should have anyway), and take the hefty jobs to a saab indy if you have inadequate time/space.

1a) If she just simply doesn't care about cars... make sure she gets her say on the things she does care about so that you get more say about the cars (so long as her basic needs with them are met, she'll be happy, especially if her other interests are also satisfied)...

2) like turbocon86 suggested, go over the car, make it right. Things may break, but if you renew problem areas before they become real problems, the car will be reliable. Stay on top of fluids, basic maintenance. It will cost a little to go over the car and make things right, but it will pay off, and with a fresh tranny, you're a long way there. Keep it simple though. Personally, I wouldn't bother going into the engine unless there are known issues. c900 engines are virtually bomb-proof. Stuff like hoses, belts, starting system/ignition/fuel delivery/vacuum lines/brakes (including brake lines) etc... make sure that stuff is in good shape...

My wife and I have only owned Saabs. She had never driven a Saab before we met. We have 3 now, 2 are c900s and the other is a 9-5. Admittedly the 9-5 sees the long haul stuff nowadays and the c900 miles are lower, but they are cheap to own, never really break down anymore, so there's no good reason to get rid of them. Great in snow, safe, cheap to insure, haul everything, + a ton of fun to drive. My wife agrees! We've rented all kinds of new cars, and she mostly hated them all... 5 minutes driving a new Forester (disgusted with the handling, visibility, lack of power control), her comment was "this is not a saab!" (shortly thereafter, I was handed the wheel for the duration of the trip)... these cars are addictive, give it time... (btw most of our friends now drive foresters or minivans because that is what their wives wanted: they have monthly car payments that are on par with my annual costs per c900 and none of the fun)...

good luck!
