Ignition lock cylinder replacement problem

1991 900 SE. The PO had the cylinder replaced by Edward Scissorhands. The thing is slashed to pieces. Not kidding. There are two deep cuts that go all the way through the cylinder wall all the way from top to bottom, and the spring-loaded pin is ground all the way off. Like someone ground through it with a grinder not only to get it out of the way, but rooted out entirely. Interesting sight. You can actually pull the cylinder right out with the key from any position.
ANYWAY... I bought a brand new replacement with factory keys from a friend and tried to install it this morning. Bentley instructions are simple. Just line it up, push in the pin, and stick the cylinder in the hole. Did that and the key won't turn more than about 45 degrees. It's like it's locked completely. The car is in reverse and the cylinder seems to be properly lined up. Just won't turn at all. Did I miss something?
Thanks guys.
