I won't claim the mantle of "expert", but here's what I think. First of all, you've done the critical test of plug wire integrity-- looking for current leaks from your existing wires and finding them rampant. That's not a Good Thing, as every amp lost to random discharge is an amp not delivered to the plug. Good on you.
Now on to the question of replacement options: I don't have enough experience to weigh in on this except to say that a new set of any brand will likely give better performance than a 7 y/o set and I doubt that there's anything magical enough about Bougicords to qualitatively distinguish them from performance offered by other new plug wires.
I wouldn't go lowest dollar on wires, but unless you're aiming to eek out every last bit of hp from the motor, I'd bet that a mid-price alternative would serve you just as well.
My 2 cents...
Scott
PS: When or if you replace the wires, I'd be especially interested to know if the "light show" you witnessed on that dark and stormy night with your existing set in place actually went away. I would hope that it will have subsided, at least, but it's an important control experiment whose results could inform all of us of the diagnostic value of the test. That is, what if the light show is a feature, not a bug? Or, rather, that it is a red herring? Inquiring minds want to know.
