Allright, I suppose I'll go with Bougies or Mags. Sounds like there's enough substantiated evidence here to preclude my own experimentation. I may see how a set of used Bosches performs, if my friend decides they're good enough to send my way. I also may have a friend willing to part with a set of Magnicors in the name of science. My car's had weird idle and accel issues, which I always chalked up to fuel system weirdness, but the timing was a tad jumpy when I used a timing light on it, so I guess I'll see what happens with better wires!

Re: the DI cassette price: I have been toying with the idea of switching to T5, but nothing big enough has broken for me to justify pulling the engine and replacing with a turbocharged unit. Maybe someday.
