Funny, I was just going to post about oil pumps. I pulled the whole housing off to do my crank seal. I had a massive oil leak and wanted to do the dry brittle oil pump o-ring at the same time. Pull it all out and do it on the bench.
My crank seal actually came off, stuck to the crank pulley!! It was so loose in the housing that it was holding harder to the crank, than the housing.
An oil filter housing filter is $4. Get one and prime the oil pump that way. Squirt oil into the RIGHT HAND hole (the one closest to the firewall) until oil comes out, then follow landjets advice. The Bentley manual actually recommends this exact method.
MY QUESTION:
On the pump gears, the large outer gear has a dimple. The bentley says that faces upward. The smaller inner planetary gear has no markings, but has a cog machined into it that fits into a slot in the end of the crankshaft. The crank has 3 slots. They all look to have equal width, and it looks like the cog on the oil pump gear will fit any of the 3 slots. One slot though, has a dimple peened into the end of the crank, perhaps indicating #1 @TDC? Is this dimple only for help with the timing chain, and timing, or am I supposed to put the cog in the oil pump, into the notch that has the dimple? Or does it just plain old not matter?
