Re: So, the c900 isn't a gr8 family hauler - 9000/9-5? I've got 2 c900's and a 9-5. They complement each other very well. The 9-5 is a much better touring car. The c900 a much more fun car around town (imho - it just feels more fun to tear around a cloverleaf in a c900, even though the 9-5 can do it faster).
The 9000 is a fantastic car, but they are basically the same deal as a c900: older parts, some NLA, any examples in the land of ice and snow are rusting. Love the big hatch, but the 9-5 wagon hauls also. I'm pretty amazed how well the sedan does for what it is.
The big problem on early 9-5's was sludge and quite possibly what killed the motor in yours. Update the PCV system (to #6) if it hasn't been done. I don't know how cheaply you can replace a motor in the 9-5. My saab indy does it all the time, but I suspect good used T7 2.3L motors are less cheaply available than from older saabs. Also be aware that there is more electronic content so you want to try to stay within at least a MCE range if not the exact year or things might not communicate properly. Depends what though.
Final caveat: rear suspension issues. If you really load the car down, it sags and eats tires. They usually need a rear suspension refresh at 80k, and even after doing mine, I still see tire wear if I do a long drive with the trunk loaded heavily. And that is even having put (stiffer) wagon springs on the rear of the sedan!
lots of info on the 9-5 bb, but overall, it is a good touring car and a lot of fun on the highway.
