I would suggest that if you have the carpet pulled up, you look closely at the foam padding -- the rubberized stuff that is on the firewall surrounding the master --- I just put a car back together where a master had been seeping apparently for a long time, and a little goes a long way......the foam was soaked with brake fluid, but you couldn't see it on the firewall.
I bet if you take out the guts of the master, you'll find a black fluid mess, and wonder how the clutch could even operate.
OH -- just reread your post question, and there is a grommet on the firewall above the area you are talking about -- could that be leaking if the grommet is compromised? It would be a mix of water, and dirt/oil carried rearward by air pressure from driving at highway speeds.
