Standing in front, looking towards the back of the car, the Allen wrench goes clockwise.
The vicegrip trick is a good recommendation, even in combination with the Allen wrench (ie, turn both at once). Also, I strongly recommend the use of something like PB Blaster or better yet (in this situation) Freeze Off just to help ease them out.
Lots of people like to replace the Allen bolts with standard hex head screws when doing this job, but I always stick with the Allens. A normal, cheap Allen L-shaped key with the short bit lopped in half works great. You can slide the long end into a small piece of tube (like 1/4" ID aluminum from Home Depot) for plenty of extra leverage if you need it.
