Slade, This comes up a lot and there are many posts here on the topic. Unfortunately there is no way to DIRECTLY identify a genuine SPG by the VIN. The standard procedure back when there were Saab dealers was to give the VIN to one of them and they could query Saab and obtain the definitive answer. In effect Saab has a "cross-reference" list of VINs to SPGs but only Saab has it and without that list the VIN won't tell you. If you contact a former dealer or current service agency they may be willing and able to help you but don't be surprised if they blow you off. There is a train of thought that there are tell-tale details sort of hidden inside the car and other guys will chime in with those but they have an element of controversy attached to them and they change from model year to model year. Also, those details can be faked by a really dedicated schemer.
